Bhutan lotteries: In a crackdown on the lottery mafia operating in the city, the city shadow police team on Thursday busted a racket which was into selling of Bhutan lotteries banned by the state government.
Special Branch Assistant Commissioner M Shamsu Illikkal said that two persons were arrested for running the illegal Bhutan lottery centre at Kaloor. The arrested are Ramesh,40, of Thiruvathukonam, Sivaganga, and G Sunder,22, of Anchugramam, Kanyakumari. Illikkal said that the duo were operating the centre under the guise of selling Kerala lottery.
He said that the activities of the racket were unearthed based on an intelligence input provided by City Police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar. The two were arrested after a shadow police team led by Assistant Commissioner Shamsu Illikkal, Sub-Inspectors Muhammed Nizar and Suresh Babu monitored their activities.
According to the police, the duo used to collect money from the people and issue the serial number of lotteries on a piece of a paper. The draws were conducted for four varieties of lotteries - Bhutan Super Plane, Super Train, Super Bus and Lamb Dear. “The numbers are also provided through mobile phones.
The draw results are available on the website www.bhutanlotteries.com. The duo used to check the results on the website and pay the amount to the winners,” the official said and added that an inter-state racket was said to be providing support to the duo to run the illegal lottery centre.
“We have strengthened our surveillance as there are inputs that a few other rackets are also operating Bhutan lottery centres clandestinely at various places in the city. A detailed probe is on to trace the remaining racket members,” Illikkal added.
