Forrest Gump: Actor and musician Gary Sinise — also known as Lt. Dan from the movie “Forrest Gump” — performed for soldiers and their families on Saturday night to show support for their service.
Sinise currently stars in “CSI: NY” as Det. Mac Taylor.
Sinise said he has always had respect for the military and he wants to make sure that current veterans are treated better than Vietnam War veterans.
“Unfortunately, what happened to our Vietnam vets was a shameful chapter in our history,” said Sinise. “No matter what side you’re on, you have to support our troops.”
Sinise supports troops through his concert tours, but also spends time with wounded veterans throughout the U.S. and supports children throughout the world through his Operation International Children organization. Operation International Children — which started off as Operation Iraqi Children and has since expanded — sends school supplies and materials to U.S. troops overseas, who then build schools for needy children and provide them with school supplies. Sinise said a mission will soon be leaving for Haiti to help the children there.
Sinise said he first started doing United Service Organizations tours in 2002 or 2003, but could only take photos and sign autographs as an actor. He was already playing with different musicians for fun and decided to start a band so he could put on a show and entertain the troops. Sinise and the Lieutenant Dan Band now hold 30 to 40 events each year.
