LTA

LTA:  Commuters at Jurong East MRT station can now say goodbye to over-crowded trains or long waiting times.
Jurong East MRT will soon have a new platform that promises to ease crowds and increase capacities.
As part of the Jurong East Modification Project (JEMP), this platform will allow additional trains on the North-South and East-West lines.
Waiting times at the relevant stations are expected to drop to two to three minutes from the current 2.5 to four minutes.
Five new trains will be deployed from May this year, while another 17 trains will be deployed by December 2011.
LTA Chief Executive Chew Hock Yong said this project was a key part of LTA’s plan to enhance Singapore’s MRT network.
"The additional platform will allow more trains to be run at shorter intervals so that commuters can benefit from shorter waiting time and a more comfortable journey," he said.

However, the JEMP platform will only operate during the morning peak hours of 7am to 9am from May 27 onwards. It will only be opened during the evening peak hours from December 2011 after the additional 17 trains are deployed.
The carrying capacity on the two lines is expected to expand by 15%.
Other than shorter waiting times and less crowded trains, the project will also include an additional entrance and a passenger drop-off point for commuters working at the International Business Park.
