NDP 2012

NDP 2012
NDP 2012: This year's National Day Parade (NDP) hopes to be a time for Singaporeans to reflect on their love for the country, with the theme "Loving Singapore, Our Home".

And this year's organisers hope to get Singaporeans to express their love for the country, through video or photo contests.

The man tasked with running the parade smoothly certainly knows the theme well.

The parade's executive committee chairman, Colonel Desmond Tan, said: "From the smallest thing like having a nice breakfast with my family, to the moments I stepped down from a long flight and coming home to Changi Airport, these are the moments I cherish.

"But most of all, Singapore is where I'm born, and where I grew up and where I lived out my dreams and this is where my family and friends are."

UPSC

UPSC
UPSC: High-Court dismissed the plea to re-asses a candidate’s answer script for UPSC Civil Services examination 2006. The plea was rejected on the grounds that there is no re-assessment provision in the examination. The decision came as a blow to the civil service aspirant Sayed Shabbir who filed the petition.

The bench of justice B D Ahmed and V K said, “As regards re-evaluation of the answer sheet of petitioner Ali, admittedly, there is no rule of UPSC entitling a candidate to seek re-evaluation of his answer sheets. We, therefore, find no merit in the contention that the petitioner is entitled to re-evaluation of his answer sheets.”

Ali challenged the Central Administrative Tribunal’s (CAT) order that had earlier dismissed his plea for re-evaluation of his answer scripts in Civil Services main examination, 2006.

Vicky Donor

Vicky Donor
Vicky Donor: 'Vicky Donor', produced by John Abraham and starring Ayushmann Khurana, Yami Gautam and Annu Kapoor added Rs 1.5 crore on Monday to the Rs 7.85 crore it made over the last weekend, taking the total up to Rs 9.35 crore. Word of mouth publicity has worked for the film and it has been a constant talking point on social networking sites too.
The ride has been steady till now and it is going very strong in the multiplexes. Unlike 'Kahaani' which had no big releases two weeks after its release, the film may face tough competition from big ticket releases like 'Tezz' (starring Ajay Devgn, Kangana Ranaut, Anil Kapoor and Boman Imani) and 'Avengers' scheduled to hit the screens later this week.
Talking about sex is still a cultural taboo in conservative India, but director Shoojit Sircar is hoping to usher in change with a light-hearted take on infertility and sperm donation. 'Vicky Donor', a romantic comedy about a sought-after sperm donor at a fertility clinic, is part of a wave of recent films tackling subjects rarely addressed in Indian cinema - gay relationships, biopics on sex symbols and now sperm donation.

Bank of India

Bank of India
Bank of India: Three more lenders-Union Bank of India, Central Bank and Corporation Bank--have reduced their lending rate following Reserve Bank of India's signal for cheaper funds. However, money continues to remain scarce with liquidity drying up partially due to intervention by the central bank in the foreign exchange market.

On Monday, the rupee fell to near-53 levels but recovered from the day's lows to close at 52.70. Dealers expect that the central bank will step in to defend the local unit if it weakens close to 53 levels again. RBI is believed to have spent over $20 billion in defending the domestic currency in 2011-12 , a move which has drained the system of over Rs 1 lakh crore of liquidity. On Monday banks borrowed Rs 1,11,190 crore from RBI through a repo facility.

BEL

BEL
BEL: Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) reported revenues of Rs.5,710 crore in 2011-12, 3 per cent higher than that in the previous year. Chairman and Managing Director Anil Kumar attributed the “below-par” performance “mainly” to the fact that the company could supply components for only 15 out of the 96 sets of the Akash missile system that were to be supplied to the armed forces during 2011-12. He blamed the failure on a public sector consortium partner, but refused to name the company.
BEL's post-tax profit declined from Rs.861 crore in 2010-11 to Rs.725 crore in 2011-12, a drop of 16 per cent. Mr. Kumar attributed the pressures on the company to the “challenging environment.” The proportion of earnings from supplies made to the defence forces declined from 80 per cent in 2010-11 to 73 per cent in 2011-12, which also affected profitability, he added.

Aces

Aces: The night was supposed to be all about ex-Met Jose Reyes' return to New York in his splashy new Miami Marlins uniform. The more significant story, though, turned out to be a pair of gems thrown by aces injured in 2011, as Johan Santana and Josh Johnsonlocked up in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel in the first game of their three-game series at Citi Field on Tuesday.
As it turned out, the bullpens decided the game as the Mets scratched out a run against Miami relieverEdward Mujica in the bottom of the eighth to edge the Marlins 2-1.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis singled to open the inning, and after Ruben Tejada popped out trying to bunt him to second, Daniel Murphy singled Nieuwenhuis to third. David Wright struck out looking, but Lucas Duda smashed one off of Mujica's right hand for an infield hit as Nieuwenhuis raced home with the go-ahead run.
