Bethune College: Netaji Subhas Open University vice-chancellor Manimala Das has broken her silence on the "neglect" of the state government. "Let me tell you that the state government didn't even give me the money to disburse salaries to the existing staff, not to speak of new posts, infrastructure and space that is a must for a university that caters to a huge number of students in the distance-learning mode. When I took office in 2008, the salary account deficit was 1.08 crore. I managed to bring it down to 58 lakh this year. The previous government sanctioned 11 posts a day before the model code of conduct came into force with a directive not to recruit anyone. I took up the matter with former higher education minister Sudarshan Roy Choudhury, but to no avail," Das said.
Das referred to her past administrative experiences as principals of two government colleges, Lady Brabourne College and Bethune College, and said, "I performed there with distinction. How come I have turned out to be a non-performer all of a sudden?"
The vice-chancellor, however, was all praise for chief minister Mamata Banerjee despite the quit hint from the higher education department. "The new government seems enthusiastic. It has taken note of our shortcomings within days of assuming charge. I hope the government will help me tide over the systemic gaps," Das said.
