Antilla: Ratan Tata’s reported remark expressing dismay at fellow industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s ostentatious residence on Altamont Road in Mumbai has, predictably, sparked a row. It has also led to a comparison of the houses of the two tycoons.
Tata’s bungalow, Cabins, at Colaba is almost ready for occupation. While the 27-floor Antilla is as tall as a 60-storey building, Cabins is just three storeys tall. Yet, the Ambanis must go to the top floor to view the sea while all Tata needs to do is step out of his seafacing residence.
Antilla will engage 600 staffers to look after the residence cum office which has a two-storey yoga studio and health centre, a dance floor, a ballroom, and an ice room to escape Mumbai’s heat. The building also boasts of a four-storey open hanging garden and a 50-seat mini theatre.
The elder Ambani’s house has space for 168 cars, but automobile manufacturer Tata wants no more than 10 cars. The Guardian estimates that Mukesh’s 4,770 sq m mansion cost over Rs4,500 crore. Tata’s home is a mere 1,200 sq m and, if sources are to be believed, cost just Rs10 crore.
